Lately Around Ireland
- We’re starting to get clearer (yet colder) weather, so most of the flooding has receded, except for parts of Galway where farmers are struggling to feed their livestock and keep them alive
- Because you can still pump gas here before paying, there’s been a 300% rise in “pumping without paying” in the last year, most likely due to the recession
- A 21-year-old man was assaulted by teens because of his American accent (don’t worry, this appears to be an isolated case)
- People have been applying for jobs at Marks and Spencer (a department store) which will be available in 2014—when its next location opens
- A County Sligo beach was covered with tens of thousands of dead starfish, attributed to freak weather
- New recruits to the Garda Reserve (police) include people originally from Poland, Australia, Cameroon, Britain, India, Lithuania, and Pakistan
- New condos, which have sat unsold for two years, sold out in one day when they were reduced from €322,000 ($470,550) to €110,000 ($160,750)
- In Dublin, a condo building’s entire roof was blown completely off during high winds; no one was hurt, but the building was less than two years old
- Denmark is offering non-European Union immigrants €13,000 ($19,000) to go back home; Ireland is following suit but will not disclose how much they will pay
- A Northern Irish political party has apologized for a press release calling the Irish language a “leprechaun language”
